All You need to know about Driving License in Bhutan

Bhutan, also known as The Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a must-see trip due to its spectacular scenery and unwavering commitment to environmental protection. Bhutanese people are required to grow trees, hence pollution does not occur.

Some Points to remember (Driving License in Bhutan):

  • You have to drive on the left side of the road.
  • The minimum age limit  for driving is 18 years. You can rent a car if you are 21 years or more.
  • Keep your documents with you all times like passport, driving license, IDP and car rental documents.
  • Seatbelts are a must.
  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians who may step onto the road at any time, regardless of traffic.
  • Children under the age of 12 should not be seated at the passenger seat.
  • You have to overtake from right while driving side is left.
  • You can overtake  a vehicle from the left side.
  •  It is illegal to drink and drive in Bhutan.
  • In Bhutan, you must not use your telephone while driving unless you are using handsfree.
  • In urban areas, the speed limit is 60 km/h, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 120 km/h on most expressways.
  • Roads are not well maintained so drive attentively. Always be ready to pull the breaks, as you may need to make a quick stop to avoid an accident.
  • In cities, street lights are scarce, thus driving at night is risky and should be avoided. Whenever possible, stay on well-traveled, well-lit highways and drive only during daylight hours.

Our Tip to make your trip memorable:

The holders of standard tourist entry permits are only permitted to travel around the districts of Thimphu and Paro. You’ll require a Route Permit or a Special Area Permit from the Immigration Office to go to different dzongkhags (districts).

You can apply for one along with your usual tourist entry permit application. Because immigration checks are located all across the country, this should not be disregarded. The good news is that your tour operator can assist you in obtaining a Route Permit, as you will be required to provide your itinerary as well.

Weather Extremes:

With warm summers and mild, dry winters, the climate is more seasonal.
